Students Become Junior Representatives

Capitol KidsFor more than a month they have been learning how to propose, argue and pass a bill in their own little legislature in Mrs. McKnight’s fourth-grade classroom at Hayden Peak Elementary. But now the students got to see the passage of a real bill, first-hand, during a field trip to the Utah State Capitol. They observed from the gallery as the House of Representatives discussed and voted on a bill. The students also happened to be on a tour of the rotunda when Governor Gary Herbert arrived to give a speech. State Representative Jim Bird and Representative Jim Dunnigan hosted the students, who were given certificates that proclaimed they were ‘Junior Representatives’, thanks to their visit to the capitol.
