
Past Board President Recognized
The Board of Education recognized J. Dale Christensen for his leadership and service to students as president of the Jordan Board of Education from 2007-09. He has been a member of the Board since 2004.
Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent Barry L. Newbold reported West Hills and South Hills Middle Schools will house the Jordan Alternative Middle School (JAMS) students. JAMS students are those referred by their schools whose behavior gets in the way of their learning and in the way of other students’ learning. Each school accepts up to 12 students. Most students enter the JAMS program with GPAs below 1.0 and leave the program with average GPAs of 3.0.
The Superintendent also provided the Board with construction updates on the new high school in Herriman, Silver Crest Elementary School and the Kauri Sue Hamilton School.
Patron Comment
Rebekah Peterson, a patron from West Jordan and a teacher in the Canyons School District, expressed concern over teachers not receiving lane and step increases this year. She suggested the entire District share the financial burdens the District is experiencing by taking three furlough days. She also encouraged the Board to take three furlough days.

- Rick Bojak commented on research from the Center of Indicators for School Quality and on his attendance at West Jordan City’s economic development council meeting.
- Randy Brinkerhoff reported on his attendance at the final student recognition ceremony held by the Utah Tooele-Salt Lake College of Applied Technology, and the emergency responders appreciation brunch hosted by Butterfield and Herriman Elementary Schools. He also wished the Canyons School District the best on becoming Utah’s newest school district.
- Carmen Freeman noted the Board will begin meeting at its new location at the Auxiliary Service Building (7905 S. Redwood Road) on Aug. 11. He also reminded the public about the open houses and ribbon cutting at the new District offices on Aug. 4 at 4 p.m.
- Peggy Jo Kennett noted the legislative committees for the Utah School Boards Association, Utah School Superintendents Association, and PTA are meeting this summer to prepare for the upcoming legislative session. She also invited the public to the Aug. 4 open houses at the new District facilities as well as the truth-in-taxation hearing the same day at 7 p.m. at Riverton High School.
Closed, Study Sessions
The Board met in closed session to discuss personnel, property and negotiations. During study session the Board discussed individual member issues and concerns.
