Board Meeting Summary

Board Approves Appointment
The Board approved the appointment of John Larsen, currently accountant/internal auditor for the District, as director of the Accounting, Budgets and Audits Department. He replaces Larry Johnston who is retiring in December.

Proposed, Tentative School Calendars Reviewed
Sherry Devenberg, director of Planning and Student Services, presented the proposed school calendar for 2010-11, and tentative calendars for 2011-12 and 2012-13. The Board will approve the calendars at its Nov. 10 meeting.

Public Hearing: Boundaries for New High School
Anthony Godfrey, Assistant Superintendent of the Bingham K-12 Feeder System, and David Stoddard, Assistant Superintendent of the Riverton K-12 Feeder System, presented proposed boundaries for the new high school in Herriman which impacts boundaries at Bingham and Riverton High Schools. The presentation reflected input received at four open houses and more than 800 patron comments from an online survey and the District Web site. The recommendation is to accept option A with a modification to include in the boundary a portion of Herriman City located east of the future Mountain View Corridor. This modified option is sensitive to patron feedback and maximizes the potential for students to attend the school closest to their homes. This option also provides the highest savings for transportation and keeps students together while allowing the greatest amount of choice. The proposed boundary can be viewed on the District Web site starting Oct. 29. The Board will take public comment for two weeks and is scheduled to vote on the boundary Nov. 10.

Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent Barry L. Newbold paid tribute to LaMar Wanberg who has retired as director of Custodial Services. Under Wanberg’s leadership the District adopted the Jordan Custodial Operating System (JCOS). It is the only standardized system that has been successfully implemented in a school district in the United States. In September, Wanberg was awarded the prestigious Dr. Michael A. Barry Award given to notable pioneers who have contributed significant advances to custodial processes and cleaning technology. Superintendent Newbold said “he [LaMar Wanberg] is in good company with other awardees who include chemists, researchers, and a consultant to the White House.”
The Superintendent also updated the Board on the District’s actions related to the H1N1 virus. He said staff and students are remaining reasonably healthy, and no major outbreaks have occurred.

Study, Closed Sessions
During study session the Board reviewed presentations from Herriman City on a new community development agency, and a proposed bill affecting school funding from Rep. Merlynn Newbold. In closed session, Board members discussed personnel, property and potential litigation.
