Centrally located, and easily accessible, Heartland Elementary has been serving the students of West Jordan since it opened in 1987. The school boundaries run from 1700 West to the Jordan River, and between 6600 South and 7800 South. The original Heartland Elementary was built to relieve overcrowding at Riverside and Majestic Elementary schools. That building closed its doors for the last time on June 6, 2007 so it could be rebuilt to better meet the needs of the students and community. The brand new Heartland Elementary building began serving students at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. Students have ample opportunity to experience instruction involving some of the finest technology available, including laptops, computer labs (stationary and mobile), document cameras, digital still and video cameras, audio enhancement systems, and smart boards.
Heartland Elementary School’s mascot is the American Husky and our school colors are red and black. Heartland Elementary is rich with history and tradition, dating back to when J. Dale Christensen of the current Jordan School District Board of Education opened the school as its first principal. The end of year dance festival has been one of the school’s most popular pastimes and students and staff have enjoyed the opportunity to incorporate new traditions into the school’s culture as well. Some of the special programs available to patrons which are not available at all schools, include the following:
- Title I
- Before School Breakfast
- Summer Breakfast & Lunch
- JSIT
- Boys and Girls Club
- Special Education Cluster Classrooms
- Spanish Immersion Program
Heartland Elementary is home to approximately 750 students. Students attend school on a traditional nine-month calendar. School begins at 8:05 a.m. and ends at 2:40 p.m. daily except for Fridays when dismissal time is 1 p.m. to allow for teacher planning and collaboration. All regular education students live within walking distance of the school. Breakfast is available for $.80 and lunch is $1.75. Visitors are welcome and are asked to check in with the front office prior to entering the school building. The School Community Council plays an active role at the school and elects new members to represent constituents on an annual basis. The PTA has always played a vital role in supporting the school mission, vision, values, and goals, and helps provide students with many valuable learning experiences.
The staff members at Heartland are all highly qualified professionals who believe all students can learn at high levels. Certified educators have an average of 8 years experience in the field. Many staff members also have advanced teaching degrees and special endorsements. 23 of our certified staff hold a Master’s degree or higher. Speech, Resource, and Guidance programs are provided at the school. Two Literacy Specialists and a Math Specialist also help monitor student progress and enhance instruction. A School-wide Discipline Plan has been established to emphasize positive recognition for desired behaviors in all areas of the school, and for dealing with behavior problems. All students at Heartland abide by the Heartland Big 3: Respect, Responsibility, and Safety. We respect ourselves, others, school grounds and property. We are responsible for what we say and do. We work and play safely.
The mission of Heartland Elementary is to provide an engaging education for students of all ability level, in a safe environment.
Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula. Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.
