Oakcrest Elementary is one of Jordan District's newer schools, having opened in August 2004 on a traditional schedule but now operates on a year-round schedule and, considering the area's growth potential, will probably continue on a year-round schedule for many years. Oakcrest Elementary is located in West Jordan on the west of Salt Lake Valley extending from 6600 South to 9600 South and from 5600 West to the West County line.
The staff at Oakcrest Elementary is working to create a safe, and caring learning environment where every student can master the basic skills and develop a sense of self-worth through a variety of learning experiences. The teachers and parents are working together to help students gain academic competence, develop social skills, and become responsible citizens.
- Oakcrest Elementary serves 1,100 students in grades K-6, and is still growing.
- Students are divided into four attendance groups or tracks. Typically, each track is in school for 45 days and then has a 15 day vacation. During July, the school closes to allow all students a common vacation.
- The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m. except on Fridays when school is dismissed at 1:25 p.m. to provide time for teachers to plan curriculum and receive training.
- The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 22.65 in first grade, 1 to 22.95 in second grade, 1 to 24.50 in third grade, and 1 to 26.70 in grades four, five and six; however, individual class sizes vary.
- Our staff is working to make Oakcrest a warm, friendly, caring place for learning. The Oakcrest staff is happy to assist visitors and anxious to help new students feel at home. Visitors are asked to check in at the office before visiting our learning centers.
- Oakcrest Elementary follows the Jordan District dress standard that requires clean, neat, modest clothing. Students are expected to learn self-discipline. If serious problems arise at school, the student, teacher, parents, counselor, and principal work as a team to find the best solution for the student.
- Basic subjects are taught in self-contained classrooms. Teachers work in teams to provide instruction in basic subjects, arts, physical education and music. The classwork in each grade follows the State and District Core Curriculum Guidelines.
- The Oakcrest faculty is comprised of state certificated teachers with diversified backgrounds and experiences. The professional staff is competent and trained to give students an excellent education.
- Our teachers actively participate in many hours of in-service each year to improve and enrich classroom teaching such as Six Traits of Writing, Balanced Literacy, and USU Core Academy.
- Teachers are evaluated regularly with the aim of maintaining high quality instruction in every classroom.
- Oakcrest has a resource team, speech clinician, and guidance specialist to provide help for students with learning disabilities, physical handicaps, or emotional needs.
- Our school has an excellent Instructional Media Center which offers students a variety of materials for academic study and personal enjoyment. Students are encouraged to go to the center and use the materials for class assignments, independent study, and reading for pleasure
- Nutritious, well-balanced lunches are served each day. The student price is $1.50. The price for adults and pre-school age children is $2.50. The cost of milk for cold lunch will be $.25 cents per carton. Free or reduced price lunches are provided for qualifying students.
- Bus service is provided for all students who live 1.5 miles or more from the school.
- An active PTA and School Community Council assist with school activities and regularly give input on important school issues.
- Oakcrest Elementary has a school choir “Melody” that allows students in grades 2-6 to experience the joy of vocal music and performing as a group. They meet before school once a week. We also have an Orchestra program that meets twice a week.
- STAR (Student Tutoring Achievement for Reading)
is a program which has been implemented at Oakcrest Elementary.
Students will have an opportunity to work one-on-one with a trained volunteer to achieve their ideal reading levels. This program is dependent upon volunteers from our community to tutor and read with these children. - Student Recognition: Principal Pride is held every other Wednesday. Students are picked by their teacher and submitted to the principal. A letter is sent home and parents and family are invited to attend the recognition and to eat lunch with their child. Grades 2, 3, and 5 meet at 11:30 a.m. in the media center. Grades 1, 4, and 6 meet at 12:00 in the media center.
- The Soaring Eagle Award is given at the end of the year to students who best exemplify excellence in scholarship and citizenship.
- Good Health and Physical Fitness are emphasized. We have a P.E Specialist on staff that works with the students weekly.
- Technology: Oakcrest’s computer lab has 31 iMac computers used for writing, production activities, keyboarding practice. Student assessments include timed drills, research projects, and student produced multimedia presentations. There is also at least one computer in every classroom. Portable AlphaSmart labs are used for teaching and practicing keyboarding skills in some of the grade levels.
Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula. Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests
The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies. The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8. The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6. Results are reported as the average percentile rank. The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.
