What
is Concurrent Enrollment?
Concurrent enrollment classes are college level classes offered
to high school students for both high school and college credit.
Concurrent enrollment students are enrolled for classes at both
the high school and the college. Students register through their
high school instructor and instructors are responsible for registering
their students each term. While students earn high school credit,
they also earn college credit, therefore reducing duplicated
classes. Salt Lake Community College credits are recorded on
a permanent college record and transcript. High schools are
responsible for recording high school credits. Both vocational
and general education classes may be offered. Instructors are
qualified high school faculty who meet the hiring SLCC requirements
for adjunct faculty. Courses taught at the high school are the
same courses taught on the SLCC site. Instructor qualifications,
syllabi, assignments, textbooks, exams and grading requirements
are equivalent. Full-time Concurrent Enrollment liasons and
SLCC faculty monitor high school concurrent enrollment courses.
Eligibility
Junior and senior students are permitted to enroll in Concurrent
Enrollment classes. The State Board of Regents recommend students
have a GPA of at least 3.0 for a successful experience. English
and history are open only to high school seniors. History students
should also have a GPA of 3.0 and a signed “Memorandum
of Understanding.”
Exceptions
Sophomores may be admitted with a special exception letter submitted
by the instructor to the Concurrent Enrollment directory at
the beginning of the semester. Sophomore approval is more common
in vocational classes. Gifted sophomore students seeking approval
for math courses should submit to the Concurrent Enrollment
director an official CPT or ACT passing score and a letter of
recommendation from the math instructor or previous math instructor.
Costs / Admissions Process
Every student who wishes to take Concurrent Enrollment classes
must first apply to SLCC with an admissions application and
a non-refundable $35 admissions fee. This process is usually
completed at the high school. A student may also fill out an
application and pay at the Courtesy Desk at the 4600 South Redwood
Road Student Center. Tuition and fees are not charged to public
education students; however, $20 tuition per credit hour is
charged for private high school students.
High school teachers and/or coordinators will verify that the
student has not been previously admitted. If a student dropped
from a class or did not register for any classes after being
admitted, the application is good for at least one year before
another admission application is required. The cost of admission
covers the cost of one math and English placement test.
