ABOUT FORT HERRIMAN MIDDLE
Fort Herriman Middle School serves students of varied economic, social, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Located in one of the fastest growing areas of the Salt Lake Valley in the city of Herriman, the school's spacious building and well-groomed campus are assets to the community. Fort Herriman Middle School is a modern two-story design featuring self-contained classrooms located around a central meeting area designed for cooperative learning, Futuristic Technology Lab, Prototype Shop, Foods Lab, Sewing Lab, Business Computer Lab, Vocal and Instrumental Music rooms, Library/Media Center, Auditorium, Gymnasium with a second level indoor track, Indoor Greenhouse, Dance Studio, Fitness Room, and office suite. The show-case middle school was completed in the summer of 2005 and offers many amenities not included in Jordan District's older middle schools such as a full wireless network, state-of-the-art multimedia presentation stations in every classroom, a wireless microphone system for each teacher, seven electronic whiteboards, two 20 laptop mobile computer labs, and three 40 station desktop computer labs.
The Fort Herriman faculty is highly respected for the standards of excellence that the school maintains and for the respect and courtesy that are extended to all.
The school serves some 900 students in grades seven, eight and nine.
- Students attend school on a regular nine-month, 180-day calendar with the summers off. The student day begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m.
- The curriculum meets or exceeds District and state core curriculum standards and includes a wide range of required and elective courses.
- The pupil/teacher ratio is 1 to 26.30 in grades 7 and 8 and 1 to 27.00 in grade 9, but actual class sizes vary.
- The 36-member faculty includes a mix of veteran and new educators. All are state certificated and well prepared in their teaching fields. Both teachers and administrators undergo formal evaluations on a regular basis.
- A full resource team, school psychologist, counselors, and teachers for students with behavioral handicaps and learning disorders are on staff to serve students with special needs.
- Computer science classes and a specially equipped computer classroom provide students with opportunities for technology training.
- Students have separate computer accounts accessible at any computer located throughout the school.
- Students are expected to attend classes regularly and to comply with the school's dress code. A computer tracking system helps monitor attendance. Staff members work closely with any student who has problems.
- An "Excellence Program" encourages students to do their best by rewarding academic achievement, good citizenship, exemplary attitudes, exceptional effort, etc.
- Nutritious hot lunches are provided daily for $1.75 per student.
- Although most Fort Herriman Middle School students live within walking distance, bus service is provided for any who live two miles or more away from school.
- Visitors are always welcome and asked to stop by the office for a visitor's pass before going to classes or moving through the building.
- Our school-wide excellence program and computerized discipline program assure recognition for exemplary students and immediate help for students experiencing problems
- Our school visitors frequently comment on the high standards of courtesy and respect they encounter at Fort Herriman Middle School.
