ABOUT MOUNT JORDAN MIDDLE

Mount Jordan Middle School, in the geographic center of Jordan School District, serves Sandy City residents of varied socio/economic status. The school's northern sector includes well-established, older neighborhoods whose history dates back to pioneer days. Other sectors are comprised of new, moderately priced homes, modern rental units, and commercial enterprises.

Mount Jordan, named for the most prominent peak in the Rocky Mountain range to the east, has a long standing tradition of quality education. Since the school's opening in 1954, the Mount Jordan faculty has prided itself upon providing students with a strong educational base which will serve them well as they proceed to high school and then on to adult life. In addition to an emphasis on basic skills, the faculty is working to maintain a positive school atmosphere where each individual can learn and grow with self-respect and confidence.

  • LogoMount Jordan Middle is the smallest middle school in the district serving about 700 students in grades seven, eight, and nine.
  • The building is a traditional design featuring large, self-contained classrooms, a full-sized gymnasium, full-size swimming pool, comfortable auditorium, media center, cafeteria, and other support areas.
  • The school is on a traditional nine-month calendar. The students' school day begins at 7:35 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m., including seven 47-minute classes, a 21-minute CLIMB period and a 30-minute lunch period.
  • The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 27.50 in grades 7 and 8 and 1 to 27.90 in grade 9. Actual class sizes vary.
  • All teachers are state certified and teach primarily in their specialty areas.
  • The faculty is organized in department teams and beginning to implement middle level philosophy.
  • Mount Jordan's curriculum meets or exceeds both District and state core curriculum standards.
  • Three cluster classes serve students who are challenged, and three resource classes are available for struggling students. We also have Advanced Placement classes designed for advanced students.
  • Mount Jordan students have access to 100 computer terminals and four fully outfitted computer labs.
  • Students are expected to abide by Mount Jordan's dress and behavior codes, which have been established by the Jordan District Board of Education.
  • Students living two miles or more from school are eligible for bus service.
  • An excellent school lunch program is provided. Students enjoy nutritious hot meals daily. Free and reduced-price lunches are provided according to federal guidelines.
  • The Mount Jordan community is involved in education. Active PTA and school volunteer programs regularly assist the school. Representatives serving on the School Community Group act as the eyes and ears of the community, giving input on school-related issues or problems.
  • School visitors are always welcome and asked to stop by the office for a "Visitor's Pass" upon arrival. Visits from students who attend other schools in the intermountain area are prohibited during regular school hours.
  • The school motto is “The view is is better when Mountaineers reach the top together.” All students are expected to learn and apply the motto.
  • Good citizenship and academic effort are recognized and rewarded through the "Mountaineer of the Month" program and other special activities designed to build student self-esteem.
  • During Mount Jordan's 50-plus years of academic excellence, thousands of students have been successfully prepared to advance to higher education and to lead prosperous, successful adult lives.
