Oquirrh Hills Middle School is a public institution located in Riverton, Utah, approximately 15 miles south of Salt Lake City. The school serves over 1,000 students from the communities of Riverton and South Jordan. Oquirrh Hills bears the Native American name of the mountain range to the west. The traditionally rural area has undergone a rapid transition to suburbia with middle and upper income housing development. Oquirrh Hills currently meets accreditation standards and has enjoyed accreditation status since it’s inception in 1979. School patrons are highly supportive and work with the faculty to see that the special, individual needs of each student are met.
- FACTS ABOUT OQUIRRH HILLS
- The school opened its doors in 1979 to 950 students in grades six, seven, and eight and currently serves over 1,000 students in grades seven, eight, and nine.
- The single-level building is located on a spacious campus and enjoys an unobstructed view of the valley and mountain landscape.
- Oquirrh Hills operates on a traditional nine-month calendar which includes 180 school days. The 8-period school day begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 2:50 p.m. Second period is designated as Teacher Advisory. During this time all students, faculty, and administration are engaged in silent, sustained reading for 20 minutes. The students operate a video announcement program each morning which is viewed throughout the building.
- OHMS instituted a Peer Mediation program in 2000. Each year a group of students receive training as peer mediators. This program is designed to promote harmonious relationships between students. This program has had a positive effect on the atmosphere in our building and has reduced the number of fights and harassment incidents.
- Our student population is comprised of approximately 96% caucasian, 2% hispanic, and 2% other.
- At Oquirrh Hills we believe strongly in highlighting student achievement. We recognize outstanding students each day on our morning announcements. The Students of the Month are recognized with a breakfast to which parents are invited. We also recognize Eagles of the Quarter in a special assembly four times a year.
- All teachers are certificated in the areas they teach and many have earned master's or doctoral degrees.
- Our building is well maintained by our custodial staff. We have five custodians that manage this huge task.
- Our lunch program is popular with the students and staff. Over 85% of our students eat school lunch.
- Our counseling program offers individual and group counseling in areas of student need. This department operates under the Comprehensive Guidance Model which emphasizes direct service to all students. Support groups are held regularly to help students deal with issues of friendship, grief, anger management and divorce.
- We have a strong Special Education Department which serve the needs of over 100 resource students.
- The school fully implements the State Core Curriculum with an emphasis in basic learning areas.
- Oquirrh Hills is operated in an orderly manner where teachers are free to teach and students are free to learn in a safe, comfortable atmosphere. Students are expected to attend school regularly and to practice responsibility and self-discipline in their behavior. District policies are enforced.
Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula. Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.
