It is an award that students across the state were hoping to win, but just four were selected and Caleb McDonald was one of them. Caleb is a 6th grade student at Welby Elementary School and he was named the first recipient of the Utah STEM Action Center’s Innovation Award. The award is given in partnership with the Utah Jazz. Caleb was chosen because of his leadership in STEM at Welby Elementary. Last year, he served as captain of the school’s First Lego League Team called the ‘Coders’ and he took that role very seriously. Caleb was there before and after school working on the team’s robot design and programming. He also helped his teammates accomplish goals and learn more about robotics. Caleb’s robotic coaches say he is very good at motivating others and encouraging them to do their best.
As part of the award, Caleb received tickets to a Jazz game and was invited down to the court at half time to be recognized as the first Innovation Award winner.
Congratulations, Caleb. This is an amazing accomplishment and we are proud of the work you do with other students.
