Herriman High Student Is a Rising Star as Nationally Recognized Violist

Abby Smith is a junior at Herriman High School and she is a rising star in the world of violists. Abby is a member of the BEAR Quartet, one of the top young string quartets in the country. The BEAR Quartet just took first place in the highly competitive St. Paul String Quartet Competition and they recently finished a 3-day residency in Los Angeles, California where the musicians participated in arts outreach and leadership training – and they recorded an episode of “From the Top!” an NPR radio program featuring top young musicians in the country.

And the success story for Abby Smith continues to grow:

  • Accepted to the Colburn School in Los Angeles with a full scholarship valued at more than $300,000 (Just 2% of applicants are accepted)
  • Accepted to the Juilliard School, one of the most well-known music conservatories in the world
  • Awarded second place in the national “Wendell Irish Viola Award”
  • Granted a “New Horizons Fellowship” to the Aspen Summer Music Festival and School
