Elk Meadows Elementary Students Witness Rare Solar Event

Student looking at Mercury through telescopeIt was an exciting morning for some students at Elk Meadows Elementary School. Thanks to 6th grade teacher Rebecca Rendell, they were able to watch Mercury, the innermost planet of our solar system, transit the sun. Using telescopes with solar filters, the students were able to watch as Mercury slowly passed directly in front of the sun as a small black dot crossing the sun’s face. The entire transit of Mercury across the sun took about 5 ½ hours. The last transit of Mercury was in 2016. The next one won’t be until 2032.

Thanks to great teachers like Mrs. Rendell for giving students this amazing educational opportunity.
