Celebrating Joel P. Jensen Middle School
Zach Nelson, Student Body President, said this year’s theme at Joel P. Jensen is “Keep Going, Keep Growing,” and the theme is a reflection of the school’s continuous growth model. Zach said at Joel P. students are taught to learn from their mistakes and teachers are focused on helping students achieve at the highest levels with Standards Based Grading. Joel P. is proud of school-wide efforts to reduce the number of student tardies and fostering a culture of being on time to class and not wasting any learning time.
Superintendent’s Recognitions
Superintendent Anthony Godfrey recognized Ammon Wiemers, Online Learning Consultant, Teaching and Learning. Superintendent Godfrey said under Mr. Wiemer’s leadership the Online Learning Program has grown, providing a wide range of quality options for students. Dr. Godfrey said the successful program is the result of hard work and educators really caring for students.
Mr. Wiemers reported that there are currently 931 students enrolled in online learning courses with a passing rate of 77.8%. He said the expansion of his team to three full-time teachers/mentors has helped to develop quality courses and provide one-on-one teaching and mentorship. Mr. Wiemers said at the heart of all the work they do is helping to support student success.
Special Business Items
The Board approved the proposed boundaries for Falcon Ridge, Fox Hollow and Oakcrest Elementary Schools and establishment of boundaries for the new elementary school in West Jordan.
Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, reported on his activities for the month of January.
Patron Comments
Heather Reich thanked the Board for all they are doing to support Majestic Elementary School. Ms. Reich also shared a story regarding a successful and fun lesson on the Magna Carta in her classroom.
Closed, Study Session
In closed session, Board members discussed potential litigation, personnel and negotiations. In open session, the Board received a presentation on counseling data to meet USBE reporting requirements. They discussed prioritization of Board goals, student achievement and continued a discussion on plans for Majestic Elementary School. They talked about a tax reform statement position and Board compliance with Open Meeting Law training.
