• Summary of Board Actions During Study Session on Nov. 30, 2021

Celebrating Valley High School
Student Body Officers Axinia Rose Quinones and Kylee Crossman talked about how grateful they are for the opportunity to attend Valley High School. They shared personal stories about how the school helps to get students back on track to graduate. Kylee said she almost stopped going to school after being overwhelmed with anxiety because of physical and mental health issues. Kylee said she had little hope of graduating until enrolling at Valley High where she is now a straight A student ready to graduate early and attend culinary school. The students thanked teachers at Valley for their level of caring.

Special Business Items
The Board adopted the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021. Paul Winward of the auditing firm Squire & Company said the District’s financial statements conform with state and federal accounting principles. Because of this, the firm has issued an unmodified opinion (clean opinion) that the statements given to the Board accurately reflect the business that has taken place this past year. The Board also approved the following special business items:

• Updates to Administrative Policy DP380 Maternity/Parent Leave
• Board Policy GP109 Construction of the Agenda
• Board Policy GP110 Public Participation in Board Meetings

Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, said he was happy to celebrate Education Support Professionals Day with quality employees who live up to their name. He said ESP’s make the work we do as a District every day possible. The Superintendent enjoyed meeting with individuals representing each employee group, to see first-hand the scope of work that is done. Dr. Godfrey congratulated Mountain Ridge High School head custodian Kevan Sprague, who was selected as the Utah School Employee Association’s Outstanding Employee of the Year.

Dr. Godfrey attended the Veterans Day concert at Elk Ridge Middle School which was extremely well done and said he walked away very proud.

• Patron Comments
• Becky Rendell, a teacher, thanked Board members for their hard work and serving the children of our community.
• Jessica Wrathall, an employee, asked the Board to review the maternity leave policy which she believes is different for biological and adoptive parents. She asked that it be more equitable.

• Board Comments
• Tracy Miller joined South Jordan Elementary School’s 5th grade students for a mock legislative session at the State Capitol which she said was fascinating. She also attended “We the People” at South Jordan Elementary School and said students did an amazing job. Ms. Miller reminded everyone about the upcoming Jordan Education Foundation “Christmas for Kids” event on Saturday, Dec. 11, which is still in need of adult chaperones and donations.
• Marilyn Richards reported on the Finance Committee and said an internal auditor is making progress on his District audit and the information will be shared with the Board in January.
• Matt Young reported on the Government Relations Committee which met to discuss priorities for the upcoming legislative session. He said they would like the legislative focus to be on supporting employees, including teachers, ESP’s and administrators who support the education of students.
• Niki George said she has had a great couple of weeks attending events in schools. She congratulated Copper Hills High School on their performance of ‘Fiddle on the Roof,’ which she said was great. She also attended the Sunset Ridge Middle School production of “Matilda.” Ms. George said she was impressed with Veterans Day recognitions in schools throughout the District and efforts to teach patriotism in schools.

In closed session, Board members discussed personnel, property, negotiations.

In open session, the Board discussed potential revisions to Board Policy GP110 Public Participation at Board Meetings, proposed changes to the Special Education LEA Policy and Procedures Manual and updates to Administrative Policy AA421 Local Professional Improvement Committee. The Board reviewed school capacities and 2022 summer project costs and discussed proposed revisions to combine Policy A9 and A11 to create a single policy on naming facilities.
