• Summary of Board Actions During Study Session on Dec. 14, 2021

Celebrating JATC North
Cadence Johansen, JATC South Student Council President and Connor Atherley, JATC North student, talked about about how the JATC North provides professional and career-oriented opportunities for students along with the opportunity to join career and technical related professional organizations. They say highly qualified teachers help them find success and learn skills to help build their careers. The students are proud of the opportunities to participate in service projects at the school and they say every year both JATC North and South provide more opportunities for students to get involved.

Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, recognized K-3 Literacy Consultant Michelle Lovell, K-3 Teacher Specialist Natalie Walker and 5^th grade student Taya who talked about how the new Literacy Launch in Jordan School District is changing lives. Taya said reading used to be so hard and made it difficult to learn in other subjects like math. However, with the new literacy skills she’s learned, Taya says she no longer dreads reading and is more confident in all of her learning. Michelle Lovell said she is excited to see how the Literacy Launch is impacting students and making a difference. Natalie Walker said she is seeing first-hand how the 95% materials are changing lives and she commended the Board for their willingness to stand behind the new literacy program. 

The Superintendent also presented his annual report to the Board of Education saying great things are happening in Jordan School District. He thanked the District’s 8,000 employees for the vital role they play each day in the progress made, especially during difficult times. He reported that Jordan District is still seeing impacts from the pandemic; however everything is continued to be focused on student achievement. The Superintendent said the new virtual schools are inspiring along with the new Majestic Arts Academy and the IB Program. He talked about empowering employees, efforts to improve customer service and safety audits which are conducted at every school on a regular basis. Superintendent Godfrey concluded by saying he is very optimistic for the future moving forward and  building momentum. He said he wants JSD to dream big and solve practical issues. 

• Board Comments
• Tracy Miller thanked the Jordan Education for their “Christmas for Kids” event and for everyone who volunteered to make the event a success. She attended Valley High’s Career Day which was a great event. On behalf of the Board, Ms. Miller thanked Shelly Nordick for her years of service in Jordan School District. She reported on the Government Relations Committee which shared their legislative priorities which emphasize supporting any legislation focusing on the demands placed on employees. She said the legislative breakfast is January 12 and the USBA conference for professional development is January 6 – 8.
• Marilyn Richards attended the production of “Elf” at South Jordan Middle School and said the students did a great job and they are so incredibly talented. She thanked Finance Committee members for their support and efforts and expressed great appreciation for John Larsen and his team.
• Darrell Robinson talked about Reality Town and what a great experience it was for students this year. He said it is exciting to go into our schools to see plays and observe classes. Mr. Robinson said he is amazed at how hard our youth work on behalf of charities and thanked them for their efforts. He also introduced student body leaders from Mountain Ridge High School and Herriman High School. The students shared details about their holiday charities and the fund-raising activities taking place.
• Jen Atwood attended the Majestic Elementary School Arts Academy “Winter Gala” which she said was amazing and it was great to see the excitement of parents, teachers and others who attended. She thanked everyone involved for their love and support of the event and Majestic Elementary Arts Academy.
• Niki George participated in the “Christmas for Kids” event and said it was a fun and inspiring experience and wILL be a new holiday tradition for her family.

Closed, Study Session
In closed session, Board members discussed personnel, property, potential litigation, and negotiations.

In open session, the Board discussed Herriman City’s infrastructure improvements for the new elementary school in Herriman. They reviewed updates to Administrative Policy DA165 Apprenticeship Program – Facility Services Department and Administrative Policy DP309 – Salary Guidelines. The Board discussed a potential boundary change for undeveloped property within the boundaries of Ridgeview Elementary School and received an update from the School Closure policy Committee. Board members also reviewed Board Policy GP114 – Board Affiliated Committees and received a report on Communications Implementation.
