Celebrating West Hills Middle School
Ashlyn Strasser, student body officer, talked about the pride students and staff take in West Hills Middle School. Ashlyn said everyone is embracing a campaign at the school this year called “No One Sits Alone.” She said it is a campaign designed to help all students feel welcome at West Hills, encouraging them to make new friends in places like the lunchroom. Ashlyn also expressed appreciation for the no cellphone policy which she said is helping students have more face-to-face conversations and is resulting in fewer distractions in the classroom. Ashlyn concluded by talking about efforts on the part of West Hills to post positive stories on social media helping to build connections and making students feel a part of the school.

The West Hills choir performed a selection under the direction of choir teacher Michael Draut.

Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, expressed appreciation for the Unified Sports programs in our schools and thanked everyone who work so hard to make them successful. He also thanked staff who will manage everything associated with the Halloween holiday making it safe and fun for everyone. The Superintendent also thanked Board members for the work they do balancing so many big decisions, and impacting so many people in a very large operation like Jordan School District.

  • Patron Comments
  • Alexandra Humphries, a parent, expressed concern over have boundary changes which may move her student and others from Copper Hills High School and West Hills Middle to Bingham High School and Elk Ridge Middle School. Ms. Humphries said she worries about the distance students would have to travel to move to the other schools.
  • Shalise Evans, a counselor at Copper Hills High School, said large student populations at schools are not a burden on staff, especially for those working in counseling. Ms. Evans said some employees worry about their own job security if students are moved in boundary changes.
  • Amber Sloan, a parent, expressed concern over potential boundary changes that would impact the Midas Creek Elementary feeder system and, in turn, impact the Riverton youth football conference.
  • Kourtnie Spencer, a parent, acknowledge the need for boundary changes and thanked the Board for giving parents options. She asked the Board to consider the importance of providing reliable, safe transportation for students who may be impacted by boundary changes.
  • Rachel Loeffler, a parent, thanked Board members for their service to JSD. Ms. Loeffler said parents at Midas Creek did not choose the current boundaries years ago, and she believes the Board has the opportunity now to make things right for students and families to stay together from elementary and middle school, through their high school years.
  • Brittanie Stevens, a parent, said she has students at Midas Creek Elementary School and Copper Mountain Middle. Ms. Stevens expressed concern over the divisive impact of proposed boundary changes on students and their mental health.
  • Karissa Kim, a parent, said having Midas Creek Elementary School students split into three middle schools has been very hard. Ms. Kim said she would love to see students attend the same middle and high school, which she believes would unify the community and build strong relationships.
  • Christie Fell, a parent and a PTA and School Community Council member at Midas Creek Elementary, acknowledged the need for a boundary change but asked the Board to consider the data and what is best for children.
  • Jeff Riffleman expressed concern over District policy and disciplinary measures which he believes do not protect students from potential harm at school.
  • Michelle Mcaffee, a parent, expressed concern over what she believes is a failure on the part of schools and the District to protect students, like her son Cody, from being the victims of assault and bullying at school.
  • Cody Nelson, a West Jordan High School student, said he was assaulted, hazed, and bullied by members of the WJHS football team. Cody says he still fears for his safety and hopes policies are put into place so that no other students have to experience what he has gone through.
  • Board Comments
  • Niki George said she is proud of the many positive things happening in Jordan School District. Ms. George expressed appreciation for the true sportsmanship on display at Unified Sports events at JSD schools. Ms. George reported that several lawmakers attended a recent Joint Legislative Committee meeting where proposed education bills were discussed.
  • Lisa Dean thanked District speech language pathologists and audiologists for the efforts they make every day to ensure students get the very best education possible. She thanked parents involved in PTAs for their hard work in fundraising. Ms. Dean recognized Columbia Elementary School for being certified as a “School of Kindness” by the organization One Kind Act a Day. Ms. Dean reported that the LEAC Committee meeting for Nov. 3 has been postponed and she said anyone interested in volunteering for the Jordan Education Foundation’s “Christmas for Kids” this year is welcome to do so.
  • Erin Burrow attended the Utah Special Olympics soccer tournament where JSD middle and high schools did very well. Ms. Burrow expressed her love for Unified Sports and how it brings all students together. Ms. Burrow reported that the JPAC meeting is Nov. 12 at the Jordan Learning Center at 6:30 p.m. and District Safety Specialist Matt Alvernaz will be a guest speaker. She also reminded everyone that PTA “Reflections” season is here and encouraged students to participate.
  • Suzanne Wood expressed appreciation for Unified Sports and said she is very proud of all the teams for participating and proud of the teams who were crowned State Champions in the soccer finals. Ms. Wood thanked administrators for supporting Unified Sports saying it is incredibly inspiring to watch students competing together on the playing field. Ms. Wood reported on the Government Relations Committee which is working to set up meetings with lawmakers to discuss potential education issues for the upcoming legislative session.

Closed, Study Session
In open session, Board members discussed a Board newsletter, reviewed proposed policy revisions to Administrative Policy A7 Suggestions from Employees; Board Policy G103 Board Members’ Principles of Operation – Conduct and Ethics; and Board Appendix Guidelines for New Board Members Orientation. They also reviewed updated survey results for potential boundary changes.

In closed session, the Board discussed personnel, property, and potential litigation.
