- Summary of Board Actions During Study Session on Nov. 18, 2025
Celebrating West Jordan Middle School
The flag ceremony was led by West Jordan Middle School student body officers and Latinos in Action leadership, followed by Kaylee Bucio Prudente singing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.
Penny Wheelwright, Student Body President, expressed great pride in West Jordan Middle School saying this year’s school motto is “Lion’s Lead, Lion’s Learn.” The motto supports building school culture and the high expectations at WJMS for students and staff and the importance of being responsible. Penny said students are asked to follow the criteria of “Safety, Responsibility, and Respect.” She said West Jordan Middle has great after school tutoring for students, and teachers always provide the very best educational opportunities, in addition to great opportunities in athletics. The student body also takes great pride in their Unified Sports teams and the outstanding job done every year on “We the People” competitions. Penny concluded by pointing out the many successful free after school programs which provide so many opportunities for all students.
- Special Business Items
The Board Approved the Following Special Business Items: - Boundary changes to balance enrollment and align middle and high school boundaries for the Midas Creek Elementary School area.
- A boundary change in the northwest area of the District where area C moves to Bingham High School. There will be no changes to areas one and two.
- Policy revisions to Administrative Policy A7 Suggestions from Employees; Board Policy G 103 Board Members’ Principles of Operation – Conduct and Ethics; and Board Appendix Guidelines for New Board Member Orientation.
- The Board adopted the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025. Kyle Greene, of the auditing firm Squire & Company, said the District’s financial statements conform with state and federal accounting principles. Additionally, the firm has issued an unmodified opinion (clean opinion) that the statements given to the Board accurately reflect the business that has taken place this past year.
Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, participated in the Planet Kindergarten at Riverton Elementary School saying it was a great experience seeing first-hand how their hard work has paid off with student achievement. He applauded teachers for meeting the goal of kindergarteners learning their letters and sounds by November 1, thanking them for the tremendous job they do each day. He said it truly is remarkable what happens with learning so quickly in kindergarten.
Dr. Godfrey said fall sports have now come to an end and he thanked parents, coaches, community members, and everyone involved who make the programs such a success.
- Patron Comments
- Elliott Fisher, a student, asked the Board to consider providing a vegetarian meal option at every school saying all kids should have this healthy option.
- Jeff Rifleman, a citizen, expressed concern over the District’s discipline process regarding allegations of student abuse and neglect. He said the District should put students first with clear policies.
- Kai Falls, a student, said there should be more vegetarian meal options, making lunch fair for all students.
- Shawn Mathis, a patron, expressed concern over the cost of a new Herriman High School greenhouse which he believes is overpriced compared to other models.
- Leslie Dixon, a parent, asked the Board to vote no on the Midas Creek boundary change and consider the impact on all students. She expressed concern over making a rushed decision and wants a plan B presented.
- Jordan Dixon, a parent, asked the Board to vote no on the Midas Creek boundary change and postpone a change until it is less destructive to those involved.
- Kiersten Calden, expressed opposition to the proposed Midas Creek boundary change due to the negative impact it will have on sports and student relationships.
- Janet Sanders, JEA president, expressed gratitude to the Board for the careful consideration they have given to the proposed boundary changes. Ms. Sanders said this has not been done quickly and she appreciates the great effort on the part of the Board.
- Alexandra Hunhries, a parent, expressed opposition to the northwest area boundary changes saying it would be disruptive to sports opportunities for students.
- Board Comments
- Niki George attended a number of School Community Council meetings and said she was very impressed with the caliber of parents participating. She thanked those willing to serve. Ms. George attended the Future Teacher Fest and said it was so exciting to see all of the options available for students.
- Erin Barrow reported that JPAC held its first meeting last week with a wonderful turnout by parents. She thanked Student Services Director Travis Hamblin and School Safety Coordinator Matt Alvernaz for the important information they shared regarding school safety initiatives.
- Suzanne Wood recognized the District’s Communication team for the work they do, often behind the scenes, with District messaging, managing social media, and doing such a wonderful job telling the incredible stories of Jordan School District. Ms. Wood reported on the Government Relations Committee which will be holding legislative breakfasts starting this week.
- Lisa Dean praised community members or their involvement and being engaged citizens. Ms. Dean attended the Future Teacher Fest for 8th grade students and said it was amazing. She thanked everyone involved in planning the event. Ms. Dean also attended the PTA Advocacy Conference and appreciates PTA members who are creative problem solvers, responsible teammates, and help the District deliver high quality education to students. She reminded everyone that JSD high school musical performances are this weekend and showcase great talent and entertainment. Ms. Dean also said volunteers are still needed for the annual Jordan Education Foundation’s “Christmas for Kids.”
Closed, Study Session
In closed session, Board members discussed personnel, property, an employee appeal, potential litigation, and negotiations.
In open session, the Board discussed the possibility of partnering with the City of West Jordan to construct a new public swimming pool that could accommodate school teams. The Board reviewed proposed boundary changes and received an update on 2026 summer projects. Board members also received follow-up information on potential high school field houses.
