Copper Canyon Elementary

About Copper Canyon Elementary

Copper Canyon Elementary is located in the city of West Jordan.  Copper Canyon opened in 2003 and serves approximately 700 students from Kindergarten to 6th Grade.  An additional 100 students are served in an early-intervention pre-school.

The Copper Canyon Community strongly supports education and parent involvement is encouraged.  Teachers are dedicated to the academic, social, and emotional development of all students and communicate regularly with parents through home contacts and parent/teacher conferences.

Highlights

  • The school operates on a traditional schedule with a short day on Fridays.
  • Transportation provides bus service for students who live 1.5 miles or more from the school.  Distance is determined by district GPS software.
  • The building features self-contained classrooms with portable classrooms added as student enrollment fluctuates.
  • The cafeteria offers a nutritious breakfast and hot lunch program each school day.  Families meeting specific criteria may qualify for free or reduced meals for their student(s).
  • Copper Canyon has an excellent, well-trained staff that hails from many different states with a variety of backgrounds, advanced degrees, and specialty training. All faculty members are state-certified teachers.
  • Teachers continually improve their skills through in-services and seminars offered by the school and district and by meeting regularly as a professional learning community.
  • The faculty uses Utah State Core Standards to determine what students need to know and be able to do at each grade level. Teachers work in collaborative teams to plan engaging lessons and use formative assessments to remediate and enrich instruction based on student need.
  • A resource team, speech and language pathologist, and school psychologist provide help for students with learning disabilities, physical handicaps, and social/emotional challenges.
  • Enrichment opportunities are provided throughout the year for all students to emphasize creativity, fine arts, leadership and science.
  • Copper Canyon offers two school music programs before school.  Students are invited to participate in the choir or orchestra program.
  • The school uses the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) framework to effectively teach appropriate behavior to all students and intervene early before unwanted behaviors escalate. Research-based, scientifically validated interventions are used whenever possible.
  • All students are actively engaged in a character education program based on Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids.  Students are taught and challenged to live each habit, resulting in student focus on positive character traits and leadership skills.
  • Students of our school have the opportunity to become members of our student council and student ambassador program.  These students take on leadership roles within the school, promote a positive student culture, and take on the responsibility of welcoming guests and new students to our school.
  • Students at Copper Canyon have the opportunity to join the Jr. HOPE Squad.  This is a peer-to-peer program that partners with local mental health and community agencies to support student growth in the areas of emotional and mental health.
  • An active Parent Teacher Association and School Community Council are very involved in supporting our school community in various ways.  School staff and the community work positively together to meet the needs of our students.
Student Achievement
RISE

RISE is a collection of computer-adaptive assessments given to Utah students beginning in grade 3 (science in grade 4) in English language arts (ELA), math and science. RISE assessments provide questions that assess students’ ability to apply higher-order thinking skills and better emulate real tasks students may encounter in education and in life.

RISE assessments were developed through a joint effort on the part of Utah teachers, parents, test development experts, and the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). The RISE assessment, together with the state’s suite of assessments in grades K-12, provide information to assist in determining students’ progress towards being prepared for college and careers upon completion of secondary school. Due to the school soft closure in March 2020, scores are not available for the 2019-20 school year.

School Accountability Report Cards

School Accountability Report Cards are issued for each public school once a year by the State of Utah. The 2017-18 school year marks the first report card under this new accountability system. Elementary and middle school report cards have four main grade categories: achievement, growth, English learner progress, and growth of the lowest 25%. High schools have one additional grade category entitled postsecondary readiness. For the 2017-18 school year, achievement and growth scores are calculated from the statewide end-of-year SAGE assessment. In future years, achievement and growth was calculated from the new Readiness. Improvement. Success. Empowerment. (RISE) assessment for grades 3-8 and the Utah Aspire Plus assessment for grades 9-10. The English learner progress category score is calculated from the annual administration of the WIDA test, which assesses students’ language proficiency in English. For high schools, the postsecondary readiness score is calculated from 11th grade performance on the ACT, advanced coursework performance, and graduation rates. The state’s School Accountability Report Cards are intended to inform educators, parents, and community stakeholders about school performance as they work collaboratively to improve student outcomes. Due to the school soft closure in March 2020, scores are not available for the 2019-20 and the 2020-21 school years.
