Welby Elementary

About Welby Elementary
  • Welby Elementary serves over 750 students from kindergarten to sixth grade in the suburban community of South Jordan. Built in 1979, the school has traditionally enjoyed strong support from both its parents and surrounding neighbors. Welby celebrated its 40th Birthday in the 2020-2021 School Year.
  • Welby staff strive to tie all instruction to Core Standards.  We also feel that it is important to teach to the whole child, and feel that the arts play an integral part.
  • Welby incorporates many programs into various grade levels as a challenge for students, including the Spelling Bee and Geography Bee. Past winners are listed on a plaque in our front entryway.
  • Teachers participate in regular technology in-service. Each student has been assigned a Chromebook to use at school for various assignments and learning activities. Teachers are also learning how to effectively use technology in their instruction focusing on making learning activities accessible on Canvas.
  • Through our website, all members of our staff can be contacted, and information accessed, such as the monthly lunch menu, PTA newsletter, and monthly calendar.
  • We are pleased to have a full-time music teacher sponsored by the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Foundation. The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program (BTSALP) provides arts-integrated instruction to elementary students, effectively increasing student performance in music.
  • Welby offers both a beginning and intermediate band and beginning and intermediate orchestra program before school. Approximately 100 students participate. In addition, choir is offered as an extracurricular activity available to all students.
  • Welby is proud of its character education programs. Students learn from their participation in the Golden Gate Kids Program.
  • Student Council and Safety Patrol are programs that help students develop leadership skills. They also provide students with the opportunity to serve others and help keep everyone safe while modeling respectful behavior.
  • Our elected School Community Council meets at least four times a year to discuss issues of concern. It provides support for projects such as school emergency preparedness supplies, technology, and Educational Support Professionals to assist teachers and staff.
  • Our PTA provides great support for teachers and students. The PTA sponsors a yearly Reflections contest, holiday treats, Red Ribbon Week activities, Fun Run, Science Night, as well as book fairs, parenting classes, field trips, and many other student services. They help create a strong bond between all parties involved in student learning.
  • PTA volunteers donate many hundreds of hours of service in classrooms at Welby throughout the year.
  • A hot lunch is served each day. Our food services personnel go beyond the mark to provide appetizing and nutritious choices in each menu. A hot breakfast is also served every morning.
  • Welby has many partnerships with local businesses, which provide additional funds and support. Each child receives a planner through their financial contributions, as well as funding such school events as Health and Safety Fairs and Family Activity Nights in cooperation with the PTA. We are also proud members of the South Jordan Valley Chamber of Commerce.
  • School visitors are always welcome at Welby. Please check in at the office for directions and information. The principal is available to meet with patrons at any given time. Identification is always required to check a student out from school.
  • Our students are given special opportunities to excel and receive recognition through our Student of the Month Award, Welby school choir, band, and orchestra, programs for gifted education, Welby clubs, science fairs, etc.
  • Welby Elementary has teamed with the State Department of Cardiovascular Health, the State Board of Education, and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee to become a Gold Medal School. We are very proud of becoming one of the first schools to receive all three medals: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, and now, Gold Plus. Each Spring we have our Fastest Wildcat Mile Runs. The fastest student from each grade is honored and placed on our Fastest Wildcat Plaque in our front hallway.
Student Achievement
RISE

RISE is a collection of computer-adaptive assessments given to Utah students beginning in grade 3 (science in grade 4) in English language arts (ELA), math and science. RISE assessments provide questions that assess students’ ability to apply higher-order thinking skills and better emulate real tasks students may encounter in education and in life.

RISE assessments were developed through a joint effort on the part of Utah teachers, parents, test development experts, and the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). The RISE assessment, together with the state’s suite of assessments in grades K-12, provide information to assist in determining students’ progress towards being prepared for college and careers upon completion of secondary school. Due to the school soft closure in March 2020, scores are not available for the 2019-20 school year.

School Accountability Report Cards

School Accountability Report Cards are issued for each public school once a year by the State of Utah. Elementary and middle school report cards have four main grade categories: achievement, growth, English learner progress, and growth of the lowest 25%. High schools have one additional grade category entitled postsecondary readiness. Achievement and growth was calculated from the new Readiness. Improvement. Success. Empowerment. (RISE) assessment for grades 3-8 and the Utah Aspire Plus assessment for grades 9-10. The English learner progress category score is calculated from the annual administration of the WIDA test, which assesses students’ language proficiency in English. For high schools, the postsecondary readiness score is calculated from 11th grade performance on the ACT, advanced coursework performance, and graduation rates. The state’s School Accountability Report Cards are intended to inform educators, parents, and community stakeholders about school performance as they work collaboratively to improve student outcomes. Due to the school soft closure in March 2020, scores are not available for the 2019-20 and the 2020-21 school years.
