Conference Unites Young Women with Utah Tech Leaders

JSD Students at SheTech Conference 365 Jordan School District girls joined 1,700 9th-12th grade students from around Utah at the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy for the annual SheTech Explorer Day. The one-day event helps young women see themselves growing into future careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Students met with executives and mentors from tech companies and universities at the event to learn more about available opportunities. The conference allowed participants to see real examples of successful women in careers as scientists, engineers, analysts, and more.

Thank you to the hosts of SheTech Explorer Day for allowing JSD students to collaborate and learn about future careers in STEM and Tech. It was an excellent educational opportunity.

Antelope Canyon Kindergarteners Find Out What It’s Like to Be a Firefighter

It was an opportunity to make new friends and find out what it’s like to be a firefighter at the same time. West Jordan City firefighters took the time to meet with kindergarten students at Antelope Canyon Elementary School recently to let them know firefighters are their friend. They taught the students what it’s like to fight fires, demonstrated how they suit up when a call comes in, and showed them some of the equipment needed to fight a fire. The students were fascinated and enjoyed the presentation, especially getting to see a big red fire truck up close and personal.

Thanks to the West Jordan City Fire Department for their outreach, getting to know young students, and being such great community partners!

Students Showcase Their Literary Prowess in Battle of the Books

Studnets looking at the battle of the books standings Bluffdale Elementary School’s 3rd and 4th grade students combined the joy of reading and the spirit of competition as they started their annual Battle of the Books.

In September, students were given a list of 20 books and challenged to read and absorb as much knowledge as possible. This sparked enthusiasm from the young participants, who formed teams of 4 or 5 students. Each of the 50 groups came up with their own unique team name, such as Baby Sharks, We’re Not Telling You, Feisty Bananas, and The Waffles.

In different battle rooms throughout the school, students were asked questions about different books, and the teams that got the most points advanced through the tournament. There were 356 total battles and at the finals, the two remaining teams battled it out during an assembly.

Cambrai Corbett with the PTA was in charge of putting the winners names on the board and said it has been incredible to watch the children’s love of reading grow leading up to the battles.
