Inclusion was a cause of celebration at Monte Vista Elementary School. The Mustangs’ unified sports program was named a Special Olympics National Unified Champion School. The designation is given only to schools that demonstrate a commitment to inclusion by meeting 10 standards of excellence. Among the standards achieved, Monte Vista provided a Unified Sports program for its students, showcased inclusive youth leadership, engaged the entire school in activities, and demonstrated a commitment to the sustainability of the program.
Students participating in the program were honored at a surprise assembly with a celebration tunnel and a banner unfurling. Several Monte Vista alumni who are now in middle school even returned to participate in the ceremony.
Monte Vista will be joined by Daybreak Elementary this year as the first two elementary schools in Utah to be given the National Unified Champion School banner. Oquirrh Hills Middle School, Riverton High School, and Copper Hills High School have also been awarded the designation in Jordan School District.
Great job, Monte Vista students, staff, and parents, on an amazing recognition!
