• Summary of Board Actions During Study Session on March 19, 2024

Celebrating Valley High School
Principal Jacinto Peterson, along with students Grace Kasanos and Jose Reyna Gilberto Rodrigues talked about their love and appreciation for Valley High School, its teachers, and everyone who helps to make it such a special place for students. Principal Peterson thanked Board members for their support saying he works with the finest educators and Education Support Professionals on earth.

Grace Kasanos said she is proud to attend Valley High School where both students and staff have a great deal of compassion for one another. She said being a peer counselor at Valley has been a very fulfilling experience. Grace admires teachers at the school who take the time to get to know every student and those teachers have inspired her to pursue a career in education. Jose Reyna Gilberto Rodrigues said Valley High has given him the extra help, support, and push he needed in order to graduate. Jose said thanks to encouragement from teachers, he enrolled in the Teacher Education program at JATC South and hopes to pursue a career in education as well. He said without Valley High School everything he has accomplished would not have been possible.

Special Business Items
The Board Approved the Following Special Business Items: 2024-25 Student Fee Schedule and New Administrative Policy AA451 Domesticated Animals in Schools and Offices.

Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, introduced Region 6 PTA Associate Jessica Navarro who recognized the 2024 JSD State Reflections winners. Ms. Navarro said Jordan School District had a total of 2,100 Reflections entries this year and 62 students advanced to State competition. The theme this year was “I Am Hopeful Because…” and a group of students with winning entries were recognized in-person at the Board meeting, shaking hands with Board members. Congratulations to all Jordan School District Region 6 and State Reflections winners.

Dr. Godfrey recognized Portrait of a Graduate Strategic Planning Steering Committee members for the time and effort over six months which was dedicated to developing a new Portrait of a Graduate and Strategic Plan for Jordan School District. Board members thanked the participants for being a significant part of the important process.

• Kristi Taylor, a teacher, suggested kindergarten teachers conduct the first three days with the same virtual learning curriculum for all students.
• Andrea Hinojosa, a high school teacher, said there are two pressing issues in high schools today. She said the first is low attendance and the second is lack of engagement. Ms. Hinogosa expressed frustration over student cell phone distractions in the classroom.

• Board Comments
• Tracy Miller attended “Honk!” the musical at Oquirrh Hills Middle School recognizing the many talented students who performed and thanking the teachers who made the musical possible. Ms. Miller was a judge for a number of “We the People” competitions saying she loves the program and the opportunities for students to showcase what they have learned. She reminded everyone about the upcoming Jordan Education Foundation “Challenge Run” on May 11 and the JEF Author Night on May 16.
• Niki George congratulated Copper Hills High School for being awarded a National Banner for Inclusion as a Special Olympics Unified Champion School, an award presented by First Lady Abbey Cox. Ms. George attended “Shrek the Musical”at Mountain Shadows Elementary School and said hats off to the teachers who put in so much extra time to make sure students have the experience of being in a musical. She also attended the JEF Outstanding Educator Award presentations and expressed appreciation for the volunteers who help to make the awards possible. She thanked Superintendent Godfrey for taking the time out of his busy schedule, over two weeks, to surprise the teachers with the awards and making them feel special.
• Marilyn Richards enjoyed participating in the Jordan Education Outstanding Educator Award presentations. She thanked Paul Bergera and the Transportation Department for their hard work in getting shuttle buses for Elk Ridge Middle and Elk Meadows Elementary students during road construction on 9800 South and Bangerter Highway. She also recognized leaders at both schools for their efforts to keep students safely transported to and from school during the road construction.
• Lisa Dean said she appreciate the stories done on JSD by the West Jordan City Journal and thanked their reporters for the great coverage. Ms. Dean reminded everyone about the upcoming “Heroes Among Us” conference at West Jordan Middle School on April 3 from 5 -7 p.m.

Closed, Study Session
In closed session, Board members discussed personnel, property, and potential litigation.

In open session, the Board reviewed 2025-26 Calendar Committee recommendations, received an update on mental health services, and discussed construction plaques. Board members also reviewed Portrait of a Graduate and Strategic Plan documents and Board Policy GP111 Type of Meetings.
