Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, thanked middle school math teachers who took time out of their summer break to attend the HIVE conference in Denver. The Superintendent heard great things from the experience the teachers had, collaborating with colleagues from around the country and those in JSD. Many math teachers said they are now eager to put into place what they learned at the conference. Dr. Godfrey said the District is gearing up for a new teacher induction celebration, which is always an exciting event and gearing up for the 2024-25 school year.

Special Business Items
The Board Approved the proposed revisions to Administrative Policy DP374 Employment Background Checks.

  • Patron Comments
  • Mayor Dirk Burton, said the City of West Jordan is getting crossing guards ready for the upcoming school year and they are still hiring. He thanked the District for collaborating on safe walking routes and gave an update on plans for a pedestrian bridge at Heartland Elementary School.
  • Janet Sanders, JEA President, expressed concern from teachers over the lack of a cell phone policy going into the new school year. Ms. Sanders said she understands policy development takes time but said it is very frustrating to go into a new school year without a clear policy regarding the use of cell phones in schools. She suggested the Board look at the West Hills Middle School approach, which she said is making a tremendous difference in the classroom.
  • Board Comments
  • Tracy Miller recognized the District Communications staff for doing a “top notch” job. She said it was fun watching them in action during a recent press conference where they anticipated the needs of media, Board members involved, and others. Ms. Miller thanked Communications for their professionalism and making the District look good.
  • Niki George thanked custodians and sweepers for their hard work deep cleaning schools and buildings over the summer making them shine.
  • Darrell Robinson attended an international education technology conference (ISTE) in Denver over the summer where JSD received the “International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Award,”and he said a number of District employees did a great job presenting. He said it is clear Jordan is a leader in the use of technology in education,
  • Marilyn Richards reported on the Facilities Committee and said a Seismic Study Report will be presented to the Board on August 13. She reported on the summer projects which she said were going really well. Ms. Richards thanked everyone involved for working so hard on the summer projects.

Closed, Study Session
In closed session, Board members discussed personnel, property, potential litigation.

In open session the Board reviewed possible revisions to Ends Policies, received a report on a cell phone survey and focus groups, and an update on plans for the 9800 South building. They had an initial review of the Title IX Policy and discussed proposed changes to Policy AA414 Student Overnight Travel.
