Celebrating South Jordan Middle School
Uiha Langi, Student Body Officer, described South Jordan Middle School as a special place where all students have the opportunity to excel and there is high student achievement. Uiha said that student achievement would not be possible without amazing teachers and their guidance along the way to help students become the best version of themselves. He thanked teachers who shape students at South Jordan Middle in academics, the arts, and athletics. Uiha said there are also many unsung heroes among the staff who work very hard to make sure all student needs are met at the school. At South Jordan Middle kindness is central to everything they do and Uiha said there is always someone to lift you and catch you if you happen to fall. • Patron Comments
  • Katie Irion, a parent, expressed concern over the banning of the book “Speak” in JSD. She said her daughter read the book and together they had a very healthy, safe conversation regarding the content. Ms. Irion said the message of this book should be taught in the classroom in a safe place. She urged Board members to read the book.
  • Jenny Cowen, a parent, has been a long-time volunteer on the JSD Literary Selection Committee because of her passion for books and reading. She asked Board members why they are allowing a few complaints to supercede the actual process of banning books.
  • Cindy Mitchell, an employee, expressed concern over three books that have recently been banned in JSD, while previously approved for classroom use. Ms. Mitchell questioned the process used to determine which books should be banned. She asked the Board to revisit the book ban process and put the books back on shelves in JSD school libraries.
  • Bryan Call, a parent, said the way JSD policies are written there are unintended consequences for some groups or activities to pay unfair fees for the use of facilities. He asked that the Board to revisit the policies.
  • Amy Ludlow, an employee, asked Board members to consider a pay increase for speech language pathologists in Jordan School District.
  • Cindy DuNamur, a parent, said the Mountain Ridge High percussion ensemble had an extremely successful year but she expressed concerns over the District’s indoor rental program. Ms. DuNamur believes the rental fees being charged for students to practice are not reasonable and asked the Board to review the rental fees.
  • Crystal Hansen, a parent and employee, has read all three books recently banned from JSD classrooms and is concerned that banning books like this will take away learning opportunities for students. She also expressed concern over the process now in place to ban books.
  • Angie Lucas, a parent and author, said she trusts librarians and does not think a few people should have the power to ban books from schools. She expressed concern over the recent banning of three books in JSD, saying they did not rise to the level of inappropriate material.
  • Megan Holyoak, an employee, spoke on behalf of a professional association which she says tries to give the best possible experience to students in the Performing Arts. The association expressed concern over costs associated with rental and custodial fees for hosting events in JSD schools.
  • Board Comments
  • Niki George attended the Spring Soiree at Majestic Elementary Arts Academy saying the school is making astonishing progress with students. Ms. George attended a number of CTE events and spring plays at Jordan Hills Elementary, Fox Hollow Elementary, and Antelope Canyon Elementary School. She thanked all the teachers and others who work so hard to make the performances possible. Ms. George reminded Board members the Joint Legislative Committee pre-delegate assembly is ready to go and invited Board members to submit questions for a panel discussion.
  • Bryce Dunford recognized Dr. Anthony Godfrey for his six-year anniversary as Superintendent of Jordan School District, saying hiring him was one of the greatest accomplishments of Mr. Dunford’s time on the Board.
  • Brian Barnett reported on the Facilities Committee which he says has completed exploring the Midas Creek feeder alignment and is ready to present some options to the Board. Mr. Barnett reported that the committee has finished its evaluation of all properties to determine if the District has a surplus, and their review of a boundary change map to reduce bus routes is complete. He said the committee continues to work on a list of possible boundary change triggers and is studying possible boundary changes to relieve over enrollment at Sunset Ridge Middle School.
  • Darrell Robinson recognized the Mountain Ridge High School percussion ensemble on a very successful year. He said they not only placed first or second in State competitions, the ensemble was the first to compete in World Championships where they made it to the semi-finals.
  • Lisa Dean attended a Language and Culture Services event where they celebrated students receiving certificates for learning the English language. She also recognized the West Jordan High and Copper Hills High School Combined Chamber Orchestra on creating something wonderful and having a successful year. Ms. Dean recognized the West Jordan High School girls softball team for winning the 5A State Title for the first time in the school’s history. Ms. Dean reminded everyone about the upcoming Jordan Education Foundation Golf Classic on June 26 and that the Salt Lake County free “My County Rec Pass” program is available once again to children from birth to 18 years old.
