Board of Education Welcomes U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor
As a Board, we were extremely proud to join Jordan School District staff in welcoming U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor into our schools for a visit that was filled with the Justice sharing her genuine warmth, wisdom, and uplifting spirit to those who met her.
It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for students and teachers as the Justice delivered a message of inspiration, taking pride in self-worth, and civic engagement. The Justice talked about her new book Just Shine! encouraging students to be the very best possible version of themselves.
Board members attended a large assembly and fireside chat where Justice Sotomayor took questions from students and staff; each chosen question was met with a thoughtful, deeply reflective answer that truly resonated with the audience. Thank you, Justice Sotomayor, for sharing your wisdom, warmth, and inspiration, and for making a difference in young lives.
The Process for Funding Big Capital Projects in Jordan School District
The Board is committed to making sure facility needs are met in our schools, just like in your household when you need a new roof, central air, driveway asphalt replacement, or an overall remodel. The process to determine which facility needs are funded is thorough, starting with a facilities coordinator visiting every school and principal, compiling their requests and needs into a capital project list. Then, the Facilities Committee, comprised of three Board members, reviews the capital project requests and makes recommendations to the entire Board on priorities for funding. Finally, the Board Finance Committee, made up of three additonal Board members, recommends a dollar amount available for capital projects. The full Board then discusses the projects and votes, making a final determination on which projects move forward. All projects are carefully considered to make sure we are making the most responsible use of taxpayer dollars.
What Is a Board Study Session? Witness the “Why” Behind Board Decisions
As your Board of Education, we invite and encourage parents and patrons to join us for our monthly Board of Education study sessions.
A Board study session is aninformational meeting where Board members review specific topics like upcoming construction projects, budget forecasts, enrollment trends, or new curriculum proposals, often via presentations from District staff.
Study sessions are open to the public, but public comments are not taken. Study sessions are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m., so please join us and become more informed.
