Celebrating Sunset Ridge Middle School
Nicole Stradley, a student body officer, said Sunset Ridge Middle School is celebrating 20 years since it first opened. She said they were excited to welcome Mike Glenn as their new principal this year as they kicked things off with an incredible “Spirit Week.” Nicole said students are proud of their “Schools to Watch” status and they appreciate the amazing teachers who make the school great. Nicole also said the student body is always looking out for and supporting one another. She concluded by saying the preforming arts are very strong at the school and bring home many awards.
Following Nicole’s remarks, the school choir performed a beautiful rendition of “Where the Light Begins.”
Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, said it was great to celebrate the opening of the Innovation Learning Lab at Juniper Elementary School and he thanked the Smith Entertainment Group and America First Credit Union for their partnership in making the lab a reality. He expressed pride in the newly opened Jordan Learning Center (JLC), which he described as very exciting and everything he hoped it would be. He said the JLC will serve thousands of families with services offered at the location. Dr. Godfrey thanked the Board of Education for their support of both the Innovation Learning Lab and the Jordan Learning Center.
Superintendent Godfrey reported on a recent visit to the Three Dimensional Education (3DE) headquarters in Atlanta, a program by Junior Achievement. Dr. Godfrey said he and other administrators were able to visit a high school participating in the program. He said it was very impressive and he plans to pursue the program, which he believes makes learning more meaningful.
- Patron Comments
- Callean Laird, a patron, asked the Board to reconsider the West Jordan Elementary School land swap with Ivory Homes due to the plan for high density cottage homes on the site.
- Jeff Rifleman, a patron, expressed concern over safety and discipline of students in schools citing an incident at West Jordan High School last year where he believes sanctions were inadequate.
- Eric Smith, a patron, said he is concerned about plans for the old West Jordan Elementary School property which he said is a retention basin and prone to water accumulating.
- Richard Packer, a parent, thanked the Board for taking care of the now vacant West Jordan Elementary School property, but expressed concerns about possible high density housing being built on that property in the future.
- Shawn Mathis, a parent, expressed concerns about student access to a website through counseling centers.
- Trevor Kitchen, said he is concerned about changes at former West Jordan Elementary School property following a land swap with Ivory Homes. He is hoping the plan for new homes will fit it in with existing homes.
- Board Comments
- Niki George talked about the academic success seen in Honor Societies at JSD schools. She thanked everyone involved in School Community Councils for their time and commitment and congratulated Copper Hills High HOSA students for their tradition of successful blood drives at the school, which continually break state records for blood collection. Ms. George attended the Antelope Canyon Fun Run which was really fun. She thanked all of the parents and community members for their support of the Fun Run. Ms. George also reported on the Joint Legislative Committee. She said September is legislative month in the classrooms and local lawmakers have been invited to visit JSD schools and classrooms.
- Bryce Dunford reported on the Finance Committee and explained to the Board tax increment proposals from cities.
- Erin Barrow attended a ribbon cutting event for the new Innovation Learning Lab at Juniper Elementary School and thanked the District’s community partners who helped to make it happen. Ms. Barrow attended the Fall Family Fair and thanked everyone involved in organizing such an amazing event for the community. She also recognized school bus drivers for their hard work and dedication.
- Brian Barnett expressed concern over a recent video message from Governor Cox which he asked all superintendents to find a way to share with secondary school students. Mr. Barnett called it a dangerous precedent and inappropriate in principle. He reported on the Facilities Committee where the “Call to Action Foundation” asked JSD if they could utilize vacant properties for low-income housing. He said the Facilities Committee advised against approving the request.
- Lisa Dean attended the Hidden Valley Sunrise Salute on Patriot Day and thanked the school for showing such patriotism and unity. She also attended a ribbon cutting for the Innovation Learning Lab at Juniper Elementary School and thanked JSD’s community partners for helping to make the lab a reality for students. Ms. Dean attended a home visit training and a West Jordan High School People of the Pacific ceremony saying it was an honor to be a part of the event. Ms. Dean also reported on Salt Lake County Parks and Rec which saw a big response to their My County Rec passes. She reminded Board members that the Jordan Education Foundations “Christmas for Kids” event is December 6 this year.
- Darrell Robinson attended the Fall Family Fair which he said was so much fun and valuable to the community. Mr. Robinson toured the Jordan Learning Center which he called a phenomenal space. He commended JSD for doing such a great job repurposing properties. Mr. Robinson also attended a Color Fun Run at Foothills Elementary School.
- Suzanne Wood reported on the Jordan Education Access Committee which is currently reading the book “Lenses of Humanity.” She said other Board members may want to read the book.
Closed, Study Session
In closed session, Board members discussed personnel, property, an employee appeal, and potential litigation.
In open session, the Board received information regarding America 250 activities, discussed Administrative Policy AA453 Use of Personal Electronic and Communication Devices, and potential high school field houses. Board members received an update on the boundary change process and District enrollment trends. They discussed Administrative Policy AA419 Student Conduct, Dress, and Appearance.
