Celebrating Herriman High School
Herriman High Student Body President Spencer King said the motto at Herriman High School this year is “Staying Strong.” He said it is a really great place to be where students achieve at high levels with a 94 percent graduation rate, up from last year. He said there is also an 80 percent graduation rate among multi-language learners. Spencer said the peer mentoring program is great and opportunities in athletics are exceptional with many sports teams in the top ten in State competitions so far this year.
Spencer said there are fantastic opportunities in performing arts at Herriman High with band, choir, orchestra, drama, and improv. He said there are so many awesome ways for students to get involved. Spencer said the coolest thing is that performing arts are available to every student who wants to learn and participate at any level. He said something else they love at Herriman High is amazing teachers and staff who are incredible, even the lunch ladies make everyone feel welcome and there is such a good sense of community.
There is deep culture at Herriman High School and Spencer said his own experience in high school has been nothing but great. Spencer concluded by saying he loves Herriman High School.
Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, thanked District grounds and maintenance crews for the many blades of grass they care for and the many, many acres they have to maintain throughout Jordan School District. Dr. Godfrey said sometimes their work is taken for granted because the grounds are kept in such good condition.
Superintendent Godfrey said he appreciates all the work that goes into the JEF Outstanding Educator Awards. He said a lot of families came from far away to celebrate and Dr. Godfrey said he enjoys seeing students get so excited. The Superintendent said it is a great opportunity for him to visit every single school in a meaningful way over the course of two weeks. He thanked Board members for their participation in the award celebrations.
Patron Comments
Tracy Miller expressed gratitude for Jordan School District’s involvement during the recent legislative session. She said having Business Administrator John Larson there and available to answer lawmaker questions was a game changer. Ms. Miller also thanked Associate Superintendent Mike Anderson for being there, answering questions, and forging strong and respectful relationships with members of the legislature.

- Erin Barrow recognized the Bingham High School Ballroom Dance team for their success across two State competitions this school year, which is Bingham Ballroom Dance’s 10th anniversary. She said the Division One team received one first-place and six second-place wins and the Division Two team received seven first-place wins. Ms. Barrow thanked the students for their hard work and dedication to the sport and for representing Jordan School District so well. She attended the JEAC event for middle school students and a number of Jordan Education Foundation Outstanding Educator Award celebrations. Ms. Burrow also attended many School Community Council meetings and thanked the efforts of parents involved. Ms. Barrow reported on JPAC which will meet Wednesday night, March 25 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at the Jordan Learning Center.
- Lisa Dean said Jordan School District has amazing student ambassadors who adhere to the characteristics of Portrait of a Graduate like “Responsible Teammates” and “Empathetic Communicators.” She said this was evident at the Unified Basketball Tournament where students reached out to spectators to talk about the experience, at the JEAC student celebration, and also at the Majestic Elementary Arts Academy Art Show where she received a grand tour from students explaining the art on display. Ms. Dean also attended a number of JEF Outstanding Educator Award celebrations and expressed appreciation for all the work that goes into those teacher recognitions. Ms. Dean reported on the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board which is implementing a Smart Rec System to improve their programs and services. She reminded everyone that the JEF Challenge Run will be held on May 9 from 9 a.m. – noon.
- Niki George congratulated the West Hills Middle School Concert Choir for their recent perfect score at the District advanced concert choir festival and the Copper Hills High Jazz Band for their superior ratings at Varsity Band Festival. Ms. George also attended the Midas Creek 6th grade play and said it was exceptional and said it was a privilege to attend a number of JEF Outstanding Educator Award celebrations. She said the awards were especially meaningful because her sister was honored as one of the recipients this year.
- Bryce Dunford reported on the Audit Committee which reviewed an internal audit regarding conflicts of interest in the District. He said the audit found no major concerns.
- Brian Barnett reported on the Facilities Committee which will meet next week to address West Jordan High School feeder enrollment issues.
Closed, Study Session
In open session the Board received an overnight travel exception request by Herriman High School, reviewed the process and timeline for approving LAND Trust and TSSA plans, and reviewed proposed revisions to Board level policies GP100 Global Governance Commitment and GP101 Governing Style.
In closed session, Board members discussed personnel, property, an employee appeal, potential litigation, and negotiations.
