Charlie said there is an incredible sense of community at West Jordan High with a vibrant, inclusive culture and incredible unity. Charlie also talked about the many diverse programs and clubs for students to participate in and she praised members of student government for helping peers connect at the school. Charlie said there is a strong culture of caring at West Jordan High with students always doing an amazing job with things like the holiday charitable fundraiser. She concluded by saying West Jordan High is so much more than just a school for everyone who attends or works at the school.

Public Comments on Boundary Changes

Mr. Call said as a School Community Council member at South Hills, he is concerned about the proposed boundary change.

Patron Comments
Michelle McAfee, a parent, expressed concern over her son’s safety and policies in place to protect students from bullying and violent attacks. Ms. McAfee said there needs to be policy change in the District.

Special Business Items
The Board Approved the proposed Revisions to Administrative Policy AA408 Fees and a recommendation to Approve a Potential Property Trade

Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Anthony Godfrey, Superintendent of Schools, said Jan Heogh who presented at a recent principal’s meeting about proficiency standards and increasing student achievement, had a very unifying impact on attendees. He gave an update on the West Jordan High School remodel project reporting that it is on schedule. Dr. Godfrey said last week was National Custodian Appreciation Day and he offered “hats off” to the District’s great group of custodians, including sweepers and trainers. Superintendent Godfrey said because schools were not in session on Friday, Oct. 2, many were not able to participate in Governor Cox’s Utah Reads Read-a-Thon on that day. However, many schools had family reading nights to promote literacy prior to the event or after. He said JSD schools are stepping up in meaningful and extraordinary ways to support student literacy.

Dr. Godfrey gave the Board an update on money the District received from the Juul class action lawsuit settlement. He said the money is being used to pilot a program putting vape detectors in middle school restrooms. Once the pilot program is successfully completed, the detectors will be placed in other middle schools districtwide.
