Students Reach for The Stars at “Kids’ Day” Basketball Game

Nearly 2,000 Jordan School District fifth graders got an experience they will not soon forget at the Delta Center this week. They packed into courtside and lower bowl seats to see the Salt Lake City Stars, the NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, take on the Iowa Wolves, a Minnesota Timberwolves affiliate.

The game started with Majestic Elementary School performing the National Anthem and included t-shirt tosses, appearances by the Utah Jazz dancers, and visits from Buster, the Stars mascot. The energetic crowd cheered the Stars on to a 130-127 victory.

Thank you to the Stars for teaching the students about the many career opportunities available in professional sports besides being an athlete and to Med One for providing the tickets free of charge.

Two Jordan School District Educators Honored by Utah Music Educators Association

Music is in the air in Jordan School District classrooms as two educators were named Outstanding Music Educators by the Utah Music Educators Association for the 2023-2024 School Year.
Olivia Murphy, the K-3 Music Educator at Majestic Elementary Arts Academy, was honored as Outstanding Elementary Music Educator. Keith Davis, the Band teacher at Copper Mountain Middle School, was named the Outstanding Junior High/Middle School Music Educator. Both were recognized at the UMEA’s award recognition last month.
Congratulations to both teachers for instilling a lifelong passion for music in our students and community.

Celebrating a Love for Literacy with Lots of Reading at Bastian Elementary School

They came from different departments in Jordan School District, like Human Resources and Accounting. Associate Superintendent Mike Anderson showed up, along with Herriman Mayor Lorin Palmer and Jordan School District Board Member Bryce Dunford, as well as plenty of others from the local community. They were all having fun reading to students at Bastian Elementary School to celebrate “Read Across America Day.”

This is a day set aside to inspire a life-long love for literacy in students. It is also a day to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss, reading books like “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham.” Thanks to everyone who took the time out of their busy schedules to show students reading is something to embrace and love no matter where you are in life.

Community Comes Together to Celebrate the Joy of Reading at Heartland Elementary School

Book worms were out in force at Heartland Elementary School as students, teachers, staff, and members of the community helped celebrate “Read Across America Day.” This is a day devoted to motivating and inspiring students to read. It is also a day to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

Everyone got in on the fun at Heartland, with police officers, firefighters, West Jordan Mayor Dirk Burton, Superintendent Anthony Godfrey, Board of Education Member Lisa Dean, Principal Buddy Alger, Area Administrator of Schools Lisa Robinson, and many others reading to students in classroom after classroom. They read Dr. Seuss books like “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham.” Dr. Seuss once said “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Thanks to Heartland and all schools for inspiring students to read every day!

It is a fun tradition that brings joy and big smiles to everyone at South Valley. Congratulations to all of the amazing performers, you truly are shining stars!
