Columbia Third Graders Get Big Lesson in City Government from Mayor Burton

Picture of Mayor Burton and studentsIt was a lesson in city government filled with fun, laughter and a lot of good information coming from a man who has a lot to share. Third grade students at Columbia Elementary School had a very special guest visit their classroom to talk about the workings of city government.

West Jordan Mayor Dirk Burton took time out of his busy schedule to stop by, meet the students, and talk about his job as mayor and other jobs in the city like police, fire and parks & recreation. Mayor Burton gave the students a quick lesson in taxes and talked to them about the importance of being kind to one another. The Mayor also took time to answer questions and told students he loves his job because he likes solving problems and making the City of West Jordan a great place to live and work.

Thank you, Mayor Burton, for supporting students and their education by sharing your knowledge, experience and kindness in the classroom.

TeamSmile Provides Free Day of Dental and Preventative Care for Students

Picture of volunteersIt was a day at the dentist inside West Jordan Middle School. Students from across Jordan School District were provided free dental and preventative care thanks to a group of volunteer dentists, dental assistants and dental hygienists who came together in the gym at West Jordan Middle using high tech mobile dental equipment to see patients. The group called TeamSmile was prepared to provide full dental work on site for students in need, including exams, x-rays, screenings, cleanings, fillings, extractions and root canals.

TeamSmile is the nation’s premier advocacy group that partners oral health professionals with professional athletic organizations to provide life-changing dental care to underserved children in communities.

Thank you to TeamSmile, their volunteer dentists, oral care professionals and the Utah Jazz organization for giving deserving students something to smile about by bringing oral care directly to them at school.
