She is a champion for students with special needs in her classroom at Mountain Ridge High School. Now, Sarah Lafond has risen to the top in something else she is passionate about. Sarah recently became the women’s world champion in arm wrestling during a competition in France.

Southland Dual Language Immersion Students Share Their Cultural Knowledge with Others

Students learn how to use a Chinese yo-yoWith the Lunar New Year celebrations starting, students enrolled in the Chinese dual immersion program (DLI) at Southland Elementary took the opportunity to use their new cultural skills to teach other students about Chinese cultural traditions. The DLI students showed how to use a Chinese yo-yo and chopstix, crafted with paper cutouts, and wrote traditional couplets to hang at home. Students from all grades at the school had a chance to participate in the events and learn from their DLI peers.

Great job, Southland teachers and students, for bringing Lunar New Year celebrations and knowledge to the whole school. Keep up the great work!

Jordan Education Foundation Celebrates Generosity of Donors

Picture of Superintendent speaking at donor luncheonIt was a day to celebrate everyone who supports students, teachers, and education by donating to and being involved with the Jordan Education Foundation. The Foundation held its annual Donor Appreciation Luncheon at the JATC South in Riverton. Guests were able to visit a variety of educational booths, which featured different programs donors support, programs that make a big difference in the lives of students and teachers.

The theme of the luncheon was “The Power of Connection.” JEF Executive Director Mike Haynes made the opening remarks welcoming everyone, thanking donors for using the power of connection to unite as a community supporting students, teachers, classrooms, staff, and a growing number of refugee families throughout Jordan School District. Superintendent Anthony Godfrey and JEF Board President Dawn Ramsey also talked about the important work donors support and the difference they make in education.

A sincere thank you to everyone using “The Power of Connection” to better the lives and education of students in Jordan School District!

Election of Officers and Oath of Office for Board of Education Members

Current Board member Tracy Miller (District 3), along with new Board members Brian Barnett (District 2) and Lisa Dean (District 7) officially took the Oath of Office and were sworn in for a four-year term Tuesday evening. Salt Lake County Clerk Lannie Chapman administered the Oath. Friends, family, local elected officials and members of the community were on hand to congratulate the Board members on their election and willingness to serve on behalf of Jordan School District.

The election of Board officers was also held with Tracy Miller elected Board President, Niki George, First Vice President, and Darrell Robinson, Second Vice President.
