Board Celebrates JATC North and South, Congratulates Herriman High Boys Cross Country

Members of the Jordan School District Board of Education recently took time to celebrate students, teachers, and staff at JATC North and South. JATC Student Council Presidents Julia Freire Sabino (JATC North) and Chayse Robison (JATC South) presented to the Board and talked about the wide variety of opportunities offered in Career and Technical Education at both campuses of JATC. They said students are allowed to dive into academic content deeply and internship opportunities are available in local businesses and industry.

The Board also recognized members of the Herriman High School Boys Cross Country team which recently made history as the first team in Utah ever to take home the first-place title at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon. The team coach, Doug Soles, thanked everyone for their support, especially the student athlete’s families and Principal Todd Quarnberg.

Silver Crest Elementary Students Celebrate Grinch Day with Costumes and Fun

Dressed as whos from Whoville and green grinches, Silver Crest Elementary School students celebrate “Grinch Day” to get in the holiday spirit. Teachers and staff also got into the festivities with costumes of their own.

Great job, Silver Crest Elementary School teachers and staff, for creating a fun learning environment.

Copper Hills High School Pals Experience the Magic of Nutcracker Ballet

Copper Hills High School’s special education teacher, Jacqueline Sheppick, organized a community outing to the Nutcracker Ballet for her students and the peer-tutor program called “Copper Hills Pals.” The field trip is a part of the life skills curriculum, teaching students essential life and social skills to prepare them for adulthood.

Two of the skills students learn are restaurant etiquette and theater etiquette. After numerous classroom lessons, students get real-life experience putting their skills to the test with an outing to Ballet West’s The Nutcracker and breakfast at a local restaurant.

Copper Hills High School took 48 people on the trip, including Ms. Sheppick’s students and the CH Pals Club. The peer tutors played a crucial role in providing support and friendship to the students as they took their newfound skills out into the community.

For Ms. Sheppick, this community outing is more than just a field trip. It is a chance for her students to apply their skills in real-life situations, foster independence and confidence, and build lifelong friendships. This is the ninth consecutive year that she has taken her students to the ballet, and it has become a beloved tradition for teachers, administrators, and students.

Oak Leaf Elementary School Students Decide to Help Nearby Students with Big Surprise This Holiday Season

They are caught up in the spirit of giving and some Oak Leaf Elementary School students are pretty proud of their work. When they heard students at another elementary school would go without the holiday box of cereal they usually get to take home for breakfast over winter break, the Oak Leaf students stepped in to help.

The Oak Leaf students, led by the school PTA, set out on a mission to collect 500 boxes of cereal to give to their fellow students as a holiday gift. They not only met, but exceeded their goal collecting more than 500 boxes of cereal! It is a gift that will warm the hearts of fellow students and ensure they have breakfast over the holiday break.

Thanks to the Oak Leaf students, staff, and PTA for thinking of others in this season of giving.

Community Comes Together Taking Care of Kids & Spreading Joy This Holiday Season

They are giving from the heart in a big way and students throughout Jordan School District will feel the love and support this holiday season. Jordan School District and the Jordan Education Foundation cannot thank members of the community enough for coming together to make sure families and children in need have food and gifts for Christmas this year.

Here are just a few examples of community generosity:

  • An entire South Jordan neighborhood gathered for a “Charity of Light” event, with residents spending the night collecting clothing and food to fill Principal’s Pantries in Jordan School District schools.
  • “The Local Bee” donated 900 beanie bags to be given out to students participating in this year’s Christmas for Kids event at Walmart. Each bag contained a brand-new beanie for students to wear and other goodies.
  • Local Stir’s cereal wanted to support students this holiday season as well. Stir’s donated 600 boxes of breakfast cereal to the Jordan Education Foundation so that every student involved in Christmas for Kids can receive their very own box to enjoy over the winter break.
