Copper Canyon Elementary Students Paint the School With Kindness

Students pain a mural of kindness Student leaders at Copper Canyon Elementary School took a break from the fun summer activities to share a message of kindness on the wall of their school’s gym. Twelve students and two staff members painted the mural that says, “Choose Kindness. It matters!” Mountain Ridge High School Sterling Scholar Chelsah Thomas designed the mural.

After completing the mural, the student council made posters and invited all students to write ways to spread kindness. They shared their thoughts on sticky notes.

Great job, Copper Canyon Elementary students and staff, spreading a positive message to your community.

Utah Virtual Learning Collaborative Forms to Enhance Virtual Learning Experiences

Utah Virtual Learning Collaborative Summer IntstituteIt started out small, with a handful of virtual school administrators meeting, virtually of course, to discuss what is working and what can be enhanced in the virtual learning experience for students in Utah. The conversations were so productive, the meetings began to take place on a monthly basis. As a result, the Utah Virtual Learning Collaborative was formed.

After many virtual meetings, the group decided to meet in person and include virtual school teachers as well as administrators. That resulted in the Utah Virtual Learning Collaborative Inaugural Summer Institute on July 11 at Hidden Valley Middle School in Jordan School District. About 80 attendees from districts across the state participated.

This was a unique gathering because all of the participants work in the virtual learning environment and it is the only such gathering in the state.

The theme this year was “Building Connections in a Virtual World,” and the Summer Institute addressed successes and concerns in virtual learning.

Thanks to everyone who attended hoping to making virtual learning the very best it can be for students in Utah.

Jordan School District Students Find Success at Educators Rising National Competition

This summer, seven very talented Jordan School District students attended the Educators Rising National Conference in Orlando. It is a performance-based competition where students who are hoping to become educators, demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and leadership in education.

Ruben Marquez Portillo from Copper Hills High School placed first in the “Varsity Creative Lecture/Ted Talk” category. Ruben is from Venezuela and has only been in the country for two years.  He even made the news in Orlando for his success!  Emily Giang, also from Copper Hills High School, placed fifth in the “Varsity Spanish Children’s Literature” category. Rachel Betts from Bingham High School, who is in the JATC Teacher Education program, took fifth place in the “Varsity Lesson Planning in STEM”.

Congratulations to these amazing students and future teachers. You make us proud!

Public Invited to West Jordan Elementary School Surplus Sale

Community members are invited to purchase a piece of West Jordan Elementary School history during a public surplus sale this Saturday, July 15. This is a sale only, not an auction, and everything will have a fixed price. Items like tables, large and small kitchen equipment, carts, chairs, and bookcases will be available.

Everything purchased will need to be paid for and picked up on Saturday. Debit and credit cards will be the only forms of payment accepted. Anything physically attached to the building, like doors, light fixtures, and cabinets are NOT for sale.
