New Process for Schools Going Virtual

In their meeting on Nov.24, the Board of Education voted on new protocols for moving schools temporarily from in-person to virtual learning. The Board has authorized the District administration to move a school to virtual learning when it meets one of the following thresholds two weekdays in a row (not over a weekend or a break):

  • Number of active student and staff cases reaches 15 or 1% of the in-person population at the school (whichever is higher).
  • Percentage of students and staff on quarantine reaches 10%.
  • Student absenteeism rate reaches 20%. (in-person)

The first day that a school reaches any of the thresholds listed above will be considered an “alert day.” The District administration will contact the school administration, ask clarifying questions, discuss any mitigating circumstances, and verify the data. A message will then be sent to staff and parents.

The day after an alert day, a follow-up message will be sent to indicate whether the school will be going virtual the next day. School circumstances will be taken into account before a final decision is made, but schools that reach the same threshold two weekdays in a row (not over a weekend or a break) should generally anticipate switching to virtual learning.

  • Additional Information:
  • The two weekday protocol is intended to provide notice that a school will potentially be moved to virtual learning.
  • Unique situations will be taken into account before final determinations are made regarding a school’s in-person or virtual status.
  • The timing for moving to virtual learning will depend on when the school meets the established thresholds. Final decisions will be made by the district administration after consulting with the school administration.
  • As per the County Health Department, active case numbers are reset to zero after a school has been on virtual learning for 14 calendar days.
  • Quarantine numbers include only students who have been quarantined by the health department through contact tracing at the school.
  • The student absenteeism rate is calculated based on students who are expected to be attending school in person.
  • In rare instances, in consultation with the school administration, a school may be switched to virtual learning based on circumstances not related to the three criteria listed above. Doing so would generally require an emergency meeting of the Board of Education.

Riverton High School Closed Thursday and Friday

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Salt Lake County Health Department has identified more than 15 active cases of COVID-19 within Riverton High School.

After investigating the circumstances, the Jordan School District Board of Education has determined that it is necessary for Riverton High School to close for two days for deep cleaning and thorough disinfecting of the building.

  • Students will not be allowed in the building Thursday, Sept. 17 and Friday, Sept. 18.
  • Staff will be allowed in the building if needed to gather instructional materials.
  • All classes, in person and online, will be cancelled on Thursday, Sept. 17.
  • Virtual instruction will continue on Friday, Sept. 18.
  • In person and online classes will resume on Monday, Sept. 21.

Again, closing the school for two days will allow custodians to continue their work thoroughly disinfecting the building.

More information will be forthcoming.

Thank you for your support.

Board Approved Reopening Plan

Dear Parents and Employees,

Last night, the Jordan School District Board of Education voted in their public meeting to approve a reopening plan for the 2020-21 school year. Most aspects of the plan emailed to employees and families last week have not changed. The following changes to the draft plan were approved by the Board:

  • Students will start school one week later than originally scheduled. Please see the updated calendar here:
    Revised 2020-21 School Calendars
  • The first day of work for employees has not changed. The first teacher contract day is August 10. This means teachers will have five additional days of preparation before students return to school.
  • Students can request virtual, online learning each quarter instead of each semester. The first quarter will end on October 16.

School will still be held in person Monday-Thursday and at home (or optional at school) on Friday as originally approved. Students can also choose to learn virtually online instead of attending school in person.

Families: Parents will soon receive registration information from their child’s school. All parents, including those who enroll their students in virtual, online learning, will need to complete their child’s school registration. The deadline for students to sign up for virtual online classes is Friday, July 31, at midnight. A video explaining the program can be viewed below. If you are interested, please enroll each student in your family separately using this link:

If you have questions before signing up for virtual, online learning, please send an email to movingforward@jordandistrict.org. We will answer your question within 24 hours.

Estimados padres y empleados,
